Knowing when to replace your ERP system can be tricky. Your ERP system is an essential part of your business. But if system limitations are making your business processes inefficient, or are making it difficult to do your work efficiently and accurately, it might be time to consider moving to a new system.

Here are some signs that it might be time to shop around for a new ERP system:

  1. Your current system is slow, inconvenient, and lacks functionality. This is usually the biggest concern among companies looking to switch their ERP system, and should be a big factor in choosing to find another system.
  2. It’s too expensive to run. It’s very easy for older ERP systems to become extremely costly to operate, especially if the software version is no longer supported by the manufacturer, the system has a lot of modifications, or the technology is old fashioned.
  3. You find yourself using things like spreadsheets to get work done. If your ERP system is too much of a hassle to use, or it takes too long to accomplish tasks otherwise, this is a huge sign that it’s time to consider other options. What’s the use in keeping software that you aren’t’ even using?
  4. Your customer service is lacking. While this may not necessarily be the fault of the system, an inefficient ERP system can make it much harder to deliver quality customer service to your customers. It can interfere with everything from having the latest product information to accurate delivery promises.
  5. Your ERP supplier isn’t changing with the times. If your company is growing and your ERP system can’t keep up, it might be time to look for another ERP vendor. Your ERP system should be updated to keep up with current technologies and processes. Your company is growing or changing faster than the system can support and you need better control of your processes. When new processes and technologies start showing up in your market, do system limitations prevent you from moving forward against the competition? How long does it take your ERP supplier to add new functionality?

A good ERP system should make it easy to run your business processes, not harder. Don’t waste time and money by letting an insufficient ERP system hold your business back.
