Creating and maintaining employee motivation is an essential part of running any successful business. Employees that are driven and enthusiastic are more productive and have higher job performance than those who are not. However, creating a work environment that is conducive to high employee morale can be a challenge.

Key performance indicators (KPI’s) can be a powerful tool for employers when it comes to creating a work environment that fosters employee motivation and drive.

When they’re implemented correctly, KPI’s can help employees feel more motivated by clearly outlining goals and allowing employees to see their progress towards them. This can give employees a sense of control over their job, and will encourage them to monitor their own performance.

This can also help to show employees the impact that they have on a company as a whole.  This encourages teamwork between employees and creates an enthusiastic work environment. KPI systems can help employees understand exactly what is expected of them by outlining specific goals and duties.

So, as an employer, how do you set up a KPI System that will encourage employee motivation?

  1. Define goals. Start by looking at the primary tasks the employee is responsible for.  Choose a goal that is realistic and achievable- something your employee has some control over. It’s important to make sure that this goal is also precise and quantifiable- such as the number of sales made, or the number of mistakes made on an assembly line.
  2. Assess current performance, and set a target. What are your employee’s strengths and weaknesses? Set goal that can be achieved within a monthly or yearly basis. This could be something like, “Increase sales by 5% this month”.  Creating a deadline will help employees focus their work and move towards their goal more quickly. Ask employees for their input- is there anything that would help them meet their targets?
  3. Collect data. Find a way to steadily and accurately collect data, and stick to it. The way data is collected depends on the goal itself. But, the more thorough and organized this process is, the better your KPI system will work. An ERP Performance Management Module can help you to organize and keep track of the information you collect. This data can be collected in a variety of ways. Casual meetings between employees and managers are a direct way to access performance, and allow for open exchange of ideas. Peer reviews have been used successfully in many manufacturing businesses. In a sales environment, keeping track of the number of sales made can be a useful indicator of job performance. In almost any workplace, time sheets can be used to track how much time is devoted to certain projects.
  4. Analyze the information you’ve collected. Compare your employee’s progress to where they were initially. Use this information to make improvements, create a new work plan, or even revise your goals if necessary. It’s very important that reviews be made regularly- even during the process itself. In some cases, checking in with employees on a weekly basis is necessary. This will help to ensure that the system is functioning properly and that adjustments can be made right away if needed.

Make sure your employees are involved in the process of choosing and implementing KPI systems. This will help them to feel involved in the process. Employee input is also useful in making adjustments and improvements to the system.

KPI’s can have a number of benefits for businesses, in addition to employee motivation. They can be useful in measuring how well a company and its employees are meeting current goals. They can also help a business measure how well they stack up against their competition. They can help spot trends in business performance, and help to identify problems or opportunities early on. KPI’s can help employers evaluate the success of a particular goal or activity within an organization or a department.

A correctly implemented KPI system can be invaluable in making a business more organized and efficient. It can also help workers feel more focused, in control and involved in the company.
