Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is not a one size fits all solution. This is seen in the fact that there are thousands of different products on the market, with some providers having multiple ERPs themselves. With so many companies that differ in size, industry, and needs requiring an ERP, it becomes clear why there is an abundance of options. Regardless of where your company stands, one thing seems universal when looking at an ERP: it needs to be configurable to their customers’ processes. Let’s look at 3 reasons and ways an ERP should be configurable.

  1. Field and layout management.

This is the first and easiest way to take an out of the box ERP and make it fit your company. You should have the ability to manage the layout, which is what you see on the screen and where it is located, as well as the fields you see in the layout. You can create column and tables, fields, and decide if you want the options to be a drop down, checkmark boxes, multiple selection, or others. You can edit them to say what you want so the ERP uses your terminology, and not the other way around. Finding an ERP with drag and drop placement will make life a lot easier as well as it will require less work to make edits.

  1. Managing workflows.

The ability to automate and manage your workflows is crucial to fully utilizing your ERP solution. It would be important to find an ERP provider that allows you to do this without needing to know code or have a team of programmers, as this will save a significant amount of time and allow employees to focus on running the business, rather than running the ERP. Automating tasks like inventory reminders, work order updates, having live updates to shop floor tracking can be crucial in operations, so managing these workflows is equally important to maximizing efficiency.

  1. Tailoring views and access.

If you are looking for a full ERP to handle all your manufacturing, financials, engineering, HR, and more, it may be beneficial to edit your employees’ views. For example, an engineer would not need to see what you accountant’s latest move was, and an employee on the shop floor would not need to see what the HR manager has done recently. You should be able to edit what an individual or department has access to. This can be beneficial because it will allow them to bring the elements of the ERP they use to the forefront, rather than having to share space with features they do not use. This will make their jobs easier and likely, them happier as employees as well.

As you can see, having a configurable enterprise resource planning software is incredibly important. When searching for an ERP software, you want it to be able to provide all of the tools your business needs in order to complete daily business processes and succeed. The most important things to search for with a configurable ERP is easy layout management and the ability to both manage workflows and  tailor access and views.
