Since the introduction of the “cloud” as a storage option, companies and individuals alike have been wary about the possible lack of security regarding their information. Now, some decision makers have started to overcome this fear and are looking into cloud-based ERP solutions.
The first decision to be made once it is clear that a company is interested in migrating to a cloud-based solution is which vendor to use. In evaluating vendors, consider data security as a necessity. Furthermore, ensure that once the vendor is chosen and the switch is started that you still own your data. If that is not the case, it can be very difficult to move data to a different solution (cloud-based or on-premises), or even to obtain backups of data. The meshing of a cloud-based ERP solution and applications that are currently in use is another important consideration. If they do not mesh that a plug-in or third-party solution may be required to allow for data exchange.
Once these questions have been answered and the answers have been evaluated, it is time to prepare the data to be moved to the cloud. To do this, the data must be analyzed to understand how it will work within the new system. If any data is of insufficient quality to be moved to the ERP system it should be corrected. Corrupt, inaccurate, incomplete, or irrelevant data should be removed entirely. Lastly, the data must be in the format required by the cloud-based ERP solution. Moving data into a cloud-based ERP solution that hasn’t been prepared properly can cause the data-migration project to run over-time and over-budget.
