Setting up a new ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software solution can be a grueling task. There are many different phases, processes, and pieces to consider. One of which is the migration of the company’s data to the new ERP system. This step is often overlooked because it seems like it should be one of the easier facets of the ERP implementation, but if it goes wrong, essentially the whole implementation was for nothing.

By data migration, I mean the process of cleansing, reformatting, restructuring, copying, and moving data from the previous locations/systems to the new ERP solution. Let’s take a look at four tips to help ensure a smooth data migration.

1. Make a plan for the ERP data migration. Confirm with team members and your ERP vendor that testing, mapping, conversion processes, and limitations are known. That way, there is no confusion on what to do and when to do it. Also, it helps to have a timeline is place to monitor your progress.

2. Know your data. The data migration is a perfect time to take what you have and clean it up. So, watching out for duplicate data might be a top priority. There is also the opportunity to trash unneeded data that otherwise would just take up space.

3. Start the migration shortly after business processes are mapped in the new ERP solution. Time is critical when it comes to ERP data migration. The timeline and amount spent on the process should reflect how much data you have and how many changes are needed. Extra time is necessary because unforeseen issues or extended time spent on it can occur very easily.

4. Have a dedicated team, person, or time set aside for migration. Due to the importance, it only makes sense that data migration gets exclusive attention to ensure there are no serious issues. Having this dedicated attention will help move the process along more efficiently and with less chance for error.
