Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software can be instrumental for today’s manufacturers. It can boost quality and efficiency, decrease costs and errors, increase productivity and profits and even improve customer service. But if you’re not using your ERP system the way it was intended, you’re probably not getting the most out of it.
Follow these tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your ERP manufacturing software.
- Select your software carefully. At first glance, many of the ERP solutions on the market today seem nearly identical in their basic functionality. However, they can differ radically in the details of what they do and how they do it. For example, a Make-to-Order (MTO) manufacturer will require an ERP manufacturing software solution with different functionality than a batch production manufacturer. Be sure to start by defining your needs, goals and requirements from an ERP system. Then thoroughly compare each option in order to weed out the ill-matched ones and hone in on the solutions that best fit your business.
- Train, train…and train some more. Do not underestimate the value of training employees and users of the system. Well-trained users are vital to the success of your ERP manufacturing software initiative. Be sure to train users during the initial implementation and then work with your ERP provider to set up an ongoing training program for existing users as well as new employees.
- Keep your system up-to-date. If your ERP provider is committed to its product, it will be offering consistent upgrades and improvements. You should plan to apply these updates whenever possible. The last thing you want to do is end up with a system that’s outdated and inflexible.
