Anyone who has ever implemented an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution knows how expensive it can get. Fortunately, we’re noticing a few industry trends that are making the cost of ERP more reasonable and ultimately helping ease sticker shock. Let’s take a look at three significant trends that are making ERP more affordable than ever before.

    1. Fewer Customizations. When ERP was first introduced, numerous customizations were common (and sometimes necessary). And the more customizations your business required, the larger your bill grew. Luckily, today’s ERP software has continuously adapted and now offers many enhanced performance features that used to require a significant amount of customization to achieve. Of course, that’s not to say there is no longer a need for ERP customizations. Depending on your requirements, sometimes it is still necessary. But the benefits of customization should be carefully evaluated against the cost in order to determine if they are truly worth it. We’re finding that more and more businesses are making fewer customizations in order to make ERP software more accessible and affordable.
    2. Proper involvement. More and more, upper management is beginning to realize that if they want their ERP initiative to be successful and stay within budget, they need to involve the people in the trenches. Those are the people who will be using the software and usually have a better grasp on the daily grind and how processes work.
    3. Better Planning. You’re probably aware of the benefits of proper ERP planning (if not, we’ve written numerous blog posts on the subject). However, it seems more and more companies are beginning to pay attention to this advice and plan, plan, plan. The result is a better executed system that is designed properly and doesn’t run into unforeseen expenses.
